The Top 5 Physician and Advanced Practice Jobs in Demand

Physician and advanced practice recruiting is becoming increasingly competitive as evident by the number of job postings by facilities and search firms nationwide. Every quarter we analyze job advertisements for physician and advanced practice recruiting to find out which specialties and types of healthcare professionals are in demand. Here are our findings:

The top five specialties in demand are according to online job postings of in-house recruiters:

  1. Family Medicine
  2. Internal Medicine
  3. Hospitalist
  4. Nurse Practitioners
  5. Emergency Medicine

As a firm, our top requested searches this quarter were:

  1. Family Medicine (15%)
  2. Nurse Practitioner (10%)
  3. Pediatrics (6%)
  4. Psychiatry (4%)
  5. Dentist (4%)

This is the first quarter that we’ve seen Nurse Practitioners enter the top five list for in-house recruiters. What this signals is a growing trend of more physician recruiters working with Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to fill their dire needs. Nationally, nearly 62 million people –20% of the US population –experience inadequate or no access to primary care because of shortages of these physicians in their communities. This lack of access plus a projected shortage in 2020 can be somewhat alleviated by utilizing Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. In many states, these practitioners have full practice authority and are able to prescribe and see patients without physician supervision. Other states with more strict regulations continue to lobby to improve their regulations.
