Five Ways to Stay Healthy While Quarantined

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many have been fully quarantined for months. It can be difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, while stuck at home with limited outside interaction. Here are some helpful tips for staying healthy while in quarantine.

  1. Stick to Your Routine as Much as Possible

Days can start to blend together if you ditch your routine. When you aren’t waking up at a normal hour, getting dressed and ready, and operating on a semi-regular schedule, you can start to feel unmotivated and become unproductive. To avoid this, try sticking to your pre-quarantine routine as closely as you can. This will give you a sense of normalcy, even during these difficult times.

2. Be Mindful of What You Eat

If you’re home all day, it can be tempting to continue sneaking back into the kitchen for something to snack on, even if you aren’t necessarily hungry. This isn’t to say that you can’t treat yourself once in a while, but being mindful of your eating habits is so important. Snacking because of boredom or stress can make you feel sluggish and can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle.

3. Move Every Day

No matter what it is you choose to do, move every single day. Go for a walk around the block. Run with your dog in the backyard. Do a yoga routine. Clean your house. Jump rope. Dance. There are so many ways that you can get your heart rate up without needing to go to the gym. Staying active will help balance your stress levels, boost your immune system, and stay fit.

4. Be Kind to Yourself

These are extremely stressful times. The uncertainty and isolation can be overwhelming, and it affects everyone differently. When tough or painful moments come, remember that no matter what you’re feeling, it’s okay. No one is handling the quarantine perfectly, and there will be moments of difficulty. So be kind to yourself, and give yourself grace.

5. Practice Self-Care

One way to make sure you’re supporting your mental health is by practicing self-care daily. Check-in with yourself each day, and be honest with what you need. Whether that’s journaling, picking up a hobby, gardening, meditating, or reading a chapter in your favorite book, practicing self-care allows your mind to reset amidst these times of high-stress.

These are uncharted waters, and no one knows when life will return to normal again. But until then, practice these tips to stay physically and mentally strong while stuck indoors.
