Job Search Help for Physicians on H-1B Visas

Many international medical graduates are searching for jobs but face obstacles because of their H-1B visa status. As a search firm working with medical groups and hospitals nationwide, we offer job search help for physicians on H-1B visas. Here are the basics of what you need to know as physicians on H-1B Visas in need of job search help:

Who are physicians on H-1B visas?

The H-1B is an employer-sponsored visa that allows foreign professionals to work in the U.S. for 3 years with one 3-year extension allowed. At the end of that time, these candidates must leave the U.S. for one year, unless they have obtained permanent residence (a green card) or have obtained another type of work visa.

What are caps and how do they affect me?

H-1B visas are subject to a cap of 65,000 new visas per fiscal year. This cap has undergone several revisions in Congress but the reality remains that it is not enough based on the number of petitions submitted. That makes the competition for these employer-sponsored visas very high. There are some exceptions to the cap that physicians on H-1B visas should know about: 1) If you received a J-1 waiver of the two-year foreign residency requirement and agree to work in a medical shortage area, 2) If you are employed at universities or colleges or at non-profit organizations affiliated with universities or colleges (“cap-exempt employers”).

How can I improve my job search?

We recommend to start your job search as early as your second year of residency or one year before graduation. You should finalize your employment as soon as you can. Another option is to target your search to cap-exempt employers. Make sure you approach your job search seriously and brush up on your interview skills, professional communication and always be responsive and polite.

Working with experienced professionals to assist in your job search is key. We recommend physicians on H-1B visas engage an immigration lawyer early in the process. As members of the National Association of Physician Recruiters (NAPR), Fidelis Partners recruiters can connect you with preferred lawyers who offer consulting services free of charge for physician candidates.
